AMA Sends Request to House Speaker to Halt New Insurance Codes

January 27, 2012

New Codes could cost practices anywhere between $83,290 and $2.7 million

New insurance codes are set to go in effect starting in 2013. Currently there are around 13,000 medical codes and that number will jump to 68,000 when the new system goes into place. The AMA letter to House Speaker Boehner urges him to stop the federal requirement forcing doctors to switch to the new codes. Doctors are currently under significant pressure to convert to electronic health records, electronic prescriptions and quality reporting in addition to patient care. The letter contends the coding change will have no direct benefit to individual patient care. More on this story can be found in the January 27, 2012 NAHU Newswire.
