Affordable Care Act Applies to Single Coverage

November 1, 2011

Many feared it would not apply to families

The administration confirmed that the Affordable Care Act applies to single coverage and not to family coverage. This means that if an employee is offered affordable coverage through their employer, then they would not be eligible for subsidies in the insurance exchange for family coverage. As a result, advocates are encouraging the administration to change the requirement to include "family coverage".

Also included in the November 1, NAHU Newswire is an article reporting on negotiations between Massachusett's Governor, Duval Patrick and President Obama on a three-year waiver deal to determine the level of federal support of Massachusett's Medicaid program. At the same time the Massachusett's congressional delegation sent a letter to HHS Secretary Sebelius supporting the request for a three-year waiver citing that lowering funding would "impede Massachusett's landmark health reform".
