High Deductible Health Plans Becoming More Popular

May 31, 2011

Ten million signed up for plan in 2010

In 2007, 4.5 million individuals had signed up for a high deductible health plan. According to a survey conducted by America's Health Insurance Plans of its members, now ten million people are enrolled. Savings can be around $85 to $100 a month but subscribers need to understand that the lower premiums mean they may have higher doctor bills because they are responsible for the deductible.

Senator Orin Hatch (R-Utah) has introduced a bill that will repeal part of the healthcare reform law that prohibited the use of Health Savings Accounts (HSA's) to pay for over the counter drugs without a doctor's prescription.
