Accountable Care Organizations Still Facing Criticism

May 25, 2011

Seven Senators want HHS to re-write rules

Seven Senators want HHS to re-write the rules for ACO's citing many hospitals and physicians say the proposal to reward them for quality care rather than the quantity of care is unworkable. CMS Administrator Donald Berwick says the proposed regulations will undergo changes as they review comments from healthcare providers before the final rules are issued.

The May 25, 2011 NAHU Newswire also reports that Vermont is moving towards a single-payer health system (A state run health plan). A panel will be formed to determine how to finance the state-run insurance plan to cover most residents. The governor cites increasing healthcare costs as the reason to move forward. He said this system would reduce administrative costs and provide incentives for high-quality care. Opposition groups claim it will require the largest tax increase in Vermont history.
