House Passes Bill to Defund Insurance Exchanges

May 4, 2011

Vote fell mainly along party lines

The bill to stop the flow of federal dollars for health insurance exchanges was approved in the House by a vote of 238-183. It is doubtful the Senate will take action on this and the White House has said it will veto it in the event of passage. Also debated on the House floor was the repeal of a bill that would take away the "slush fund" HHS Secretary Sebelieus can access to give funds to states. She has told members of Congress that she believes she has unlimited funds and does not have to seek additional permission to spend more. The Congressional Budget Office says the spending could exceed $14 billion over the next 10 years.

An article on Governor Duval Patrick and his newly formed political action committee to tout the benefits of the healthcare law can also be found in the May 4, 2011 NAHU Newswire.
