Medicare Offers Financial Incentives

May 2, 2011

Obama Administration issues final regulations on incentives for quality care performance

Final regulations have been issued by the Obama administration that tie quality of care benchmarks to compensation. Medicare pays around $26 billion annually for hospital readmissions. CMS claims $4.4 billion was spent caring for patients that were harmed while hospitalized in 2009. When measuring quality of care, various factors will be evaluated to include patient satisfaction scores. About 3,500 hospitals will be eligible for performance incentives for fiscal year 2013.

The Health Care law provision that allowed young adults under age 26 to remain on their parents' health plans increased enrollments faster than government expectations. More on these stories can be found in the May 2, 2011 NAHU Newswire.
