Provisions in Healthcare Law Raise Antitrust Concerns

Mergers and alliances could result in reduced competition and increased costs for consumers

The new Healthcare reform law encourages collaboration between doctors and hospitals that could mean reduced competition, ultimately leading to higher costs for the consumer. Federal Trade Commission J. Thomas Rosch expressed his concerns to the White House and suggests that "vigorous antitrust enforcement" will be necessary. The February 10, 2011 NAHU Newswire is reporting in its lead story that GOP Governors are asking President Obama to support an expedited hearing by the US Supreme Court to determine the constitutionality of the Healthcare Reform law.

Also in the February 10, 2011 NAHU Newswire: College Health Plans are now under consideration if they must comply with the healthcare law. HHS has proposed a new rule requiring these plans to be in compliance citing it would ensure the plans would remain viable and affordable plan for students.
