NAIC to Vote on Standardization of Health Policy Descriptions

December 17, 2010

Insurers would be required to provide benefit information on a standardized chart

A provision in the ACA, requires insurers to provide health benefit information on a standardized chart in plain English. This standardization would make it easier for shoppers to understand the coverage available and be better able to compare plans.

Other news in the December 16, 2010 NAHU Newswire includes the collaboration of six health systems to improve care while cutting costs. Included in the six health systems is New Hampshire based Dartmouth-Hitchcock. The combined population of the six entities is more then 10 million people. They will focus on common conditions and treatments and analyze the data and share information on what approaches have the best outcomes at the lowest costs. Knee replacements will be the first studied treatment. Dr. James Weinstein, director of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practices says the goal is to spend six months on each condition and then move on.

U.S. District Judge, Roger Vinson will be hearing oral arguments today for the 2 remaining counts challenging the constitutional validity of the healthcare law.
