Health Exchanges to Include Minimum Benefits Requirements

November 29, 2010

Minimum benefits established by Congress

Starting in 2014, individuals will be able to go the state run health exchanges to purchase insurance. All plans sold in the exchanges must cover the minimum benefits for services such as emergency room coverage, prescription drugs, hospitalization, medical tests and maternity care. The law created 5 levels of plans ranging from bronze to platinum and all with varying levels of deductibles and copays, depending on what the individual can afford to pay. Some say that the exchanges should offer the option for individuals to purchase only the services they want. The exchanges must also enroll Medicaid eligible individuals.
