Suit Filed Against Massachusetts Health Insurance Connector

August 10, 2010

Man cannot afford health insurance premium

Suit was filed in Middlesex Superior Court against the Massachusetts Health Insurance Connector Authority. The plaintiff is alleged to not meet the guidelines to qualify for the state's subsidized plan nor does he have health benefits at his job. He claims he cannot afford the $800 a month health insurance premium nor can he afford the $2,000 penalty for not purchasing coverage.

CMS has sent a letter to state Medicaid directors advising they can ease restraints that allow individuals to receive care outside a nursing home. Previously states had to certify the Medicaid recipient needed institutional level care to qualify.
