Massachusetts Division of Insurance Releases Health Insurance Data

Number of sick people purchasing health insurance coverage only when sick quadrupled

Between 2006 and 2008, the number of sick individuals purchasing health insurance coverage quadrupled. The consequence of these actions result in insured Massachusetts' residents paying higher premiums for healthcare insurance. Lawmakers are considering laws that would make it more difficult for policyholders to purchase coverage when ill and then cancel it when it is no longer needed. There is a sponsored bill that would limit an enrollment period to one month a year similar to the "open enrollment" period that employer-sponsored health plans offer.
