Medicare "Doc Fix" Passed

June 21, 2010

Cuts postponed until November 30th

By unanimous consent, the Senate passed legislation to extend the Medicare twenty-one percent rate cut reimbursement until November 30, 2010. Because the House could not act until this week, Medicare started processing claims at the reduced rate and providers will have to resubmit their claims if they would like to be "made whole". This creates an extra cost burden on providers and taxpayers.

The COBRA subsidy extension remains uncertain. The Congressional Budget Office scored the Senate version of the extension at $4.1 billion, which was higher than supporters expected. This will be a hard sell to extend the health insurance subsidy for unemployed individuals. The subsidy extension expired May 31, 2010.
