Federal High Risk Pool Funding Inadequate?

May 28, 2010

As few as 200,000 Americans may actually get benefits through the pool.

It is estimated that 5.6 to 7 million Americans may qualify for coverage through the Federal High Risk Pool but as few as 200,000 may actually get benefits. A study released Thursday contradicts other studies that suggested that "millions" might find coverage there. CMS actuary, Richard Foster estimates that 375,000 people will find coverage and the pool will run out of funds in 2011 or 2012.

HHS Secretary has asked self-insured employers to cover adult children earlier than the law requires. James P. Gelfand, of the US Chamber of Commerce said that he does not expect business to do so. Self-insured employers do not have to cover adult children until the beginning of the next health plan year beginning after Sept. 23, 2010, which is often January 1.

GOP lawmakers have introduced legislation to repeal the recently passed healthcare law and replace it with an alternative plan. It is doubtful the legislation will make it to the House floor but could make a useful campaign tool for the fall.
