Rules for Extending Dependent Coverage Released

May 11, 2010

White House issued rules allowing young adults to remain on parents' policies up to age 26

Employer sponsored health plans that were in effect March 23, 2010 can exclude adult children of workers until 2014 if the child has access to insurance through another employer sponsored plan. The rules go into effect September 23rd but 65 insurers have agreed to not drop young college graduates this spring.

The New York Times is reporting that the Florida Healthcare Law challenge could carry the most weight. Citing the weight of their argument being whether Congress can regulate "inactivity". The penalty for not purchasing health insurance is a tax penalty for inactivity.
