Federal High Risk Pool Opens in July

April 23, 2010

ONLY uninsured with pre-existing health conditions can apply

Starting in July only uninsured individuals with pre-existing medical conditions can purchase insurance through the federal special high-risk pool at a cost similar to what others are paying. Individuals that are currently insured through state high-risk pools will not be able to participate in the lower premium pools due to the fact they are "insured" and may feel cheated.

Maine's superior court has upheld a decision denying WellPoint's BCBS division a rate increase request for personal lines insurance of 18.5% after the state insurance superintendent had granted only a 10.9% rate increase. Chief Justice Thomas E. Humphrey said Maine's statute does not guarantee insurers a "mandated profit margin."
