Three Carriers to Keep Young Adults on Parents' Policy

April 21, 2010

Agreed to do so prior to law taking effect

United Healthcare, WellPoint Inc. and Humana Inc., will allow young adults to stay on their parents' policies until September 23, when the new federal law allows them to stay on the policy. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius welcomed the actions of the carriers and added: "young adults cannot afford health insurance on their own."

In a move by congress, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) intends to move legislation forward that would allow a check on "unjustified premiums." Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are looking for ways to standardize the authority of rate review that is typically the responsibility of state insurance commissioners
