Maine Court to Rule on Rejected Premium Increase

Meanwhile, Massachusetts regulators reject 9 out of 10 rate increase requests

In a closely watched court case in Maine, the decision regarding a rejected premium increase request last year by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield will be decided soon. The subsequent smaller increase that was approved left Anthem loosing money on individual policies. This decision could have significant implications for state regulation of insurance.

Massachusetts regulators, with the blessings of Governor Duval Patrick rejected 9 our to 10 recently rate increase requests. While small businesses cheered, insurers predict there will be a disruption in the market place as there are no controls that limit what doctors and hospitals charge for services.

Physicians still face a proposed 21% Medicare cut. Congress recessed for Easter without addressing this issue and CMS has agreed to delay the cut until after Congress returns. Physicians' organization membership would like this constant threat of cuts resolved once and for all.
