President Critical of Health Insurers

March 9, 2010

Meanwhile states question federal health insurance rate regulation

While the President continues to criticize health insurers, state insurance commissioners are concerned that while federal regulation focusing on holding premium costs down, it will ultimately be the states monitoring the solvency of the companies and protecting the consumers. The commissioners also warn that holding down premiums prior to bringing down costs is risky.

Debate over reconciliation rules starts as the Democratic leadership readies to push through healthcare reform before Easter. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) claims, "The whole process is destroying the way the Senate is supposed to function."
