President Pressing for Health Reform Bill

March 8, 2010

Would like resolution prior to Easter recess

While the President has taken a more "hands on" approach in pushing health care reform through Congress, it is unclear if the votes are there to pass a bill even using reconciliation. The original House version narrowly passed in a vote of 220-215. Since that time, three of the 220 congressional members that voted in favor of the bill are no longer there (one died and two others have left Congress). Rep. Stupak (D-MI) is in a disagreement over the federal funding of abortions and claims he can garner support of others to move to the nay side. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius said Stupak is misinformed about the Senate bill while a guest on a Sunday talk show.
