Twenty-Three Million Could Remain Uninsured Under Healthcare Reform

January 4, 2010

Constitutionality of reform may make it to the Supreme Court.

The January 4, 2010 NAHU Newswire is reporting: It is estimated that around 8% Americans under age 65 could remain uninsured under the proposed healthcare reform legislation according the Congressional Budget Office. The mandate requiring individuals to purchase health insurance or face fines and penalties of at least 2 percent of their income to the government is being looked at as unconstitutional. Meanwhile, Attorney Generals of thirteen states are threatening action over the Nebraska Medicaid cost exemption deal to obtain Senator Ben Nelson's (D-NE) vote to advance the Senate Healthcare Bill in the Senate.

Another provision that was included in the Senate healthcare bill is the mandate requiring construction companies with five or more employees to provide health insurance coverage (this was lobbied heavily by the labor union lobbyists). The limit in other industries is 50 employees to provide coverage.

The House and Senate will work on merging the two bills with a goal of putting it on the President's desk by the end of January.
