Senator Lieberman (I-CT) Opposed to Medicare Buy-in

December 15, 2009

Threatened to join Republicans in Senate vote

Senator Joe Lieberman stated Sunday that he would join the Republican's filibuster if the Medicare Buy-in option was in the Senate version of healthcare reform. Late Monday evening, Senators Harkin and Rockefeller confirmed that the Medicare buy-in option would be dropped thus paving the way for the Senate version to move forward. Senator Reid says the final bill will close the Medicare "doughnut hole". AARP's CEO A. Barry Rand had signaled that AARP would withdraw its support without that change.

Senator Cornyn (R-Texas) argues that the bill as currently written does not decrease healthcare costs and actually will increase costs throughout the entire system and make individual policies more costly.
