Senate Set to Debate Healthcare Reform Today

November 30, 2009

Doubtful if 60 votes there to advance legislation

In the latest edition of the NAHU Newswire it is reported that the 60 votes necessary to advance healthcare reform in the Senate may not be there. Several issues that will surface during the debate are: public funded abortion, the public plan, excise tax on the "high-cost" health insurance plans, prescription drugs, exchanges and Medicare cuts. Democrats could end the debate immediately by filing cloture on the bill where a simple majority is all that would be needed to advance the bill. Some of the main reforms are not scheduled to take effect until 2014 while the taxation will begin immediately.

Other articles of interest in the November 30, 2009 NAHU Newswire are:

  • Under proposed reforms, young would initially see higher health premiums
  • Healthcare bills could extend coverage to illegal immigrants
  • Most physicians do not discuss treatment costs with patients
