House Passes Health Care Reform Bill

November 9, 2009

Vote: 220-215

As reported in the November 9th NAHU Newswire, late Saturday night, the House of Representatives passed their version of Health Care Reform. The landmark bill expands the federal government roll in providing healthcare for most Americans. Now the debate moves on to the Senate where it is uncertain if the votes are there to pass the legislation.

Mental Health parity takes effect January 1st, 2010 for most health insurance plans. The law requires group plans covering more than 50 individuals to provide the same level of benefit for mental health and substance abuse problems as medical ones.

Seniors on Medicare Advantage private plans sold by: Health Net, WellCare Health Plans and Coventry will need to replace their plans. Effective January 1, 2010, these carriers will no longer offer the Medicare Advantage private fee for service programs.
