| News Mandatory Insurer Reporting Law becomes effective January 1, 2009 February 6, 2009 Health Insurers required to report Social Security Numbers Mandatory reporting of social security numbers takes effect January 1, 2009 for group health plan (GHP) arrangements and July 1, 2009 for Medicare beneficiaries who receive settlements, judgments, awards or other payment from liability insurance including self-insurance, no fault insurance, or workers compensation. The purpose of the Section 111 GHP reporting process is to enable the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to correctly pay for the health insurance benefits of Medicare beneficiaries by determining primary versus secondary payer responsibility. The exchange of data helps to assure that claims will be paid by the appropriate organization at first billing. So, what does this mean to you? To maintain health insurance coverage, you as the consumer will have to provide social security numbers for yourself and dependents that you cover under your plan. Additional information regarding compliance can be found at: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/ |
