| News Great American Smokeout is November 20th October 22, 2008 Over 18% of American Deaths every year are from diseases related to smoking Mark Twain said: "Quitting smoking is easy. I've done it a thousand times." Quitting smoking is incredibly difficult but doing so will improve your health, increase your bank account and lower your healthcare costs. The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout went nationwide in 1977. Since then it has highlighted the dangers of smoking and helped to shape our culture norms. The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout event grew out of a 1971 event in Randolph, MA, in which Arthur P. Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund. It has grown into an annual event the third Thursday of November where smokers are encouraged to stop smoking on that day. There are many programs to assist smokers. If you decide that you are going to quit, you should visit your doctor to inquire if Nicotine Replacement Therapy is right for you. Other resources are: You Can Quit Smoking Self-Help Kit ( www.surgeongeneral.gov/tobacco ), talk to live support at: U.S. Quit line consortium: 1-800-QUIT-NOW or Quitnet- ( www.quitnet.com ) NEEBCo also offers health awareness brochures to its clients.
